CHAPTER THIRTEEN

“There he is!”

On the far side of Pupcakes, Abby looked up from the computer where she was doing inventory. “There who is?”

Tassie glanced over her shoulder at her sister. “Conrad’s son. He just went into Hug in a Mug.”

She hadn’t been staring out the window specifically looking for Tristan the next morning, but it was lucky she’d been replacing the seasonal store display they kept there or she might not have seen him at all. Talking to him there would be much easier than trying to have a conversation at the club where his band played. Plus, she could bring Baxter to the coffee shop. The club, not so much.

Quickly placing the plush floppy-eared bunny and his doggy friend so they were leaning against the colorful Easter eggs of various sizes nestled among the silk plants, Tassie picked up Baxter and headed for the break room so she could grab his harness and leash.

“Baxter and I are going over there to talk to Tristan,” she told her sister.

Abby nodded and waved, not glancing up from the computer.

Hug in a Mug lived up to its name in every sense of the word. The interior was all warm wood tones and cozy seating areas and the whole shop was filled with the delicious scent of coffee. Even though Tassie would pick a cup of hot tea over coffee any day, she loved the aroma of the latter. Luckily, Hug in a Mug sold both.

But unfortunately, she didn’t have time to get her usual cinnamon chai tea because Tristan had picked up his order and was already heading for the door. Tall and lanky, he wore a slouch knit beanie over shaggy light brown hair and wire-rimmed glasses. He didn’t look like a murderer.

He had his nose buried in his phone as he walked, so he didn’t see Tassie quickly moving to intercept him until she was right in front of him.

“Tristan Meyers,” she said. “Conrad Meyers’ son, right?”

She thought she should probably check to make sure he was actually the right guy before interrogating him. That would be embarrassing.

“Yeah.” Hazel eyes regarded her warily. “Are you a reporter?”

“A reporter?” she repeated, confused for a moment before realization dawned on her. “No! I’m a friend of Sara’s.” She probably should have led with that first. “Tassie Drake. I own Pupcakes—across the street.”

Tristan glanced over her shoulder in the direction she pointed, then nodded. “Right. Sara mentioned you. Sorry I thought you were a reporter. It’s just that people have been hounding me everywhere I go since my old man got murdered.”

And now, he’d be able to add her to the list.

Tassie gestured toward a table. “Do you have a minute to talk?”

“Um…” He checked his phone to see what time it was. “Sure.”

When they were seated, she settled Baxter on her lap. “I wanted to thank you for helping Sara find a lawyer.”

He leaned forward, wrapping his hands around the to-go cup, a bewildered expression on his face. “I can’t believe the cops think she killed my old man.
